ISS schools compete at cross country state championships; Bryant Moore places 2nd

The cross country programs of Iredell-Statesville Schools made their mark at the NCHSAA State Cross Country Championships, held at the Ivey Redmon Sports Complex, with standout performances across four classifications.

From Lake Norman’s top-five individual finisher to West Iredell’s strong team performance and North Iredell’s steady showing, the district’s runners proved among the best in the state.

West Iredell: Moore Earns State Runner-Up, Team Finishes 13th in 4A

West Iredell senior Bryant Moore delivered one of the best performances of the weekend, finishing second overall (16:13.04) in the NCHSAA 4A Boys’ Championship, leading the Warriors to a 13th-place team finish with 326 points.

Behind him, Aaron Moore placed 64th (18:44.40), with Austin St. Claire (93rd, 19:39.93), Braxton Setzer (112th, 20:20.65), and Matthew McFall (114th, 20:38.52) rounding out the scoring. Jaxon Moore (125th, 21:27.70) and Michael Melvin (130th, 21:51.80) also competed to help secure one of West Iredell’s best state-meet team efforts in program history.

North Iredell: Sturtevant Leads Girls, Johnson and Crisp Strong in 6A Boys

North Iredell’s girls turned in a balanced performance in the 6A division, led by Breanna Sturtevant, who finished 31st (20:40.82). Baylee Steele (51st, 21:12.90) and Mia Sohovich (63rd, 21:36.15) helped the Raiders place three runners inside the top 65 statewide.

In the 6A boys’ race, Matthew Johnson (60th, 17:50.02) and Logan Crisp (63rd, 17:59.03) represented the Raiders well, both finishing under 18 minutes against a competitive statewide field.

Lake Norman: Dingman Places Fifth, Duraipandi and Lawver Crack Top 35

The Lake Norman Wildcats delivered multiple top-30 finishes in both divisions of the 7A Championships, led by senior standout Kasey Dingman, who finished fifth overall (18:09.76) in the girls’ race — one of the best results by any Iredell-Statesville athlete in recent years.

Lake Norman’s combined results gave the Wildcats one of the deepest team efforts in the 7A field, with both Dingman and Duraipandi earning top-20 individual honors.

South Iredell: Houston and Highley Pace Vikings in 7A Girls

South Iredell placed three runners inside the top 80 in the 7A Girls’ Championship, led by Alyssa Houston (25th, 19:17.91) and Ava Tiley (63rd, 20:39.45). Leighton Highley followed close behind in 79th (21:09.70), marking a strong showing for the Vikings’ trio on the state stage.
